Background:
Karin would seem like your average, 16-year-old high school student…if it weren’t for her heritage. You see, Karin belongs to a long lineage of vampire, who originated in Transylvania. It all started out with Karin’s grandparents, James and Elda Marker. The two vampires had migrated from Europe, to Japan in order to escape vampire hunters, where they inherited the last name of “Maaka.” Elda and James gave birth to Henry, Karin’s father, and arranged his marriage with the young Callera, Karin’s mother. After being settled in their new home, Elda and James had decided to hibernate beneath Henry and Callera’s home, for their old age.
It is revealed that in this world, vampires have a certain blood type that they prefer over others. For example, Carrera chooses only to drink the blood of compulsive liars, for she feels that their blood has the best taste. Henry, however, prefers the taste of blood from people with much pride. Not much information is known about this phenomenon, but it is certain that the less experienced vampires will undoubtedly lose control of themselves when around someone with their preferred blood type. Also, when the vampires drink from their victims, they do not kill the humans, but only take what they need. It proves to be beneficial to both predator and prey, because the vampire’s thirst is quenched, while the victim will gain temporarily what they lacked before; ex: a liar would stop lying, become more honest, a person full of pride will gain more humility.
The first child Callera gave birth to was Ren Maaka, Karin’s elder brother. His blood preference is stress, and he can be found with a different woman every night of the week. While he seems wise in the areas of vampires, he is very unintelligible of the humanity of the species, and sees vampires as superior in all ways. Karin is the middle child, but I’ll get back to that here soon. Then there was Anju, Karin’s younger sister. Anju is in elementary school still, and with this youth, she has not yet become a full-fledged vampire. Thus so, she can be out during the day with an umbrella. Although young, Anju is proficient in the use of bats to control the memories of humans, and to stalk others—most of the time, Karin. She is often seen with an emotionless expression, but it is truly the opposite in most circumstances. Karin and Anju both rely on each other for very different things.
And then, there’s Karin.
Although Karin is a pureblood vampire, she happens to be a rare case. Instead of the need to drink the blood of others, Karin has to give her blood to others via a bite on the neck, or else she suffers an explosive nosebleed. This is due to a major increase in her blood count, where she can no longer hold it in. Ren is the first to discover that Karin still has a blood preference, even though she gives blood and doesn’t take it. Her preference turns out to be unhappiness/misfortune. It is easy to tell when Karin is close to her blood increasing, because her pupils shrink, and tends to get hot and light-headed. This event has to occur at least once a month, and can possibly happen more frequently is she happens to meet someone with an exuberant amount of unhappiness or misfortune. But, just the same, when Karin manages to bite a victim and give them her blood, the prey gain what they lacked, and temporarily become more fortunate and happy. Along with the strange occurrence of giving blood to her victims, Karin can openly walk in daylight, and attend school and a waitressing job. If Karin fails to bite someone and holds in her blood, without the occurrence of a nosebleed, she will enter a berserker-like mindset. While in this state, she will aggressively seek a target for blood injection and displays more classic vampire traits. She has demonstrated strength, speed and possibly enhanced senses and the ability to use chi or else vampiric powers to fling a target away. She does not possess the abilities to erase the memories of her victims, which is where Anju’s role is key in keeping the family of vampires a secret.

It was that time of month again.
The day in which Karin despised with all of her being, and equally loathed what she was herself. The pounding in her head was ceaseless as she struggled to roll out of bed, her chest tight, making it hard to breathe. In an attempt to regain balance, the plum-haired girl side-stepped quickly, lolling from left to right until she was finally able to stand, stable. A soft sigh was released from her lips as she lightly rubbed her eyes.
”Awe man…I really hate this. I wish mom would let me stay home today…”
Getting ready for school, Karin kept telling herself that she would have to be particularly careful today around others. One little slip of self control, and the Maaka family would be exposed to all of Japan. A chill reverberated down her spine at the thought.
Grandma would kill me…
After a thorough brushing of her teeth, honey-brown optics gazed deeply into the mirror, examining her canines. Just as the young vampire expected, the once normal-sized canine teeth were now fully developed fangs, causing a depressed expression to cross the girl’s face.
Just great.
”So…it’s going to be one of those days…huh.”
